Architect William Pereira designed the master plan for the campus and the city surrounding the new university, and the original campus buildings. UC Irvine opened for classes in 1965 with many buildings still under construction.

“You did get this feeling you were in utopia and everyone else had that same feeling, everybody I lived with.  In my neighborhood, everyone had that same feel, like you were in The Best Place…There were pools everywhere, there were fields, there were tennis courts.  Schools were right there.  It was like everything they said it was supposed to be, very planned.  It was boring for teenagers.”
